Our Contracts & Job Crafting

Our focus is the individual, which is why we offer Job Crafting. We offer roles on based on what our team wants to do and what will make them happy. Our entire team has been hired on this basis. None of our team work a standard 9 – 5. From the outset this means each team member has a role that they’ve considered in detail and can shape as they progress. This forms the foundation of job satisfaction. All roles, contracts, and hours are maintained as negotiable / an open discussion, with feedback encouraged.

Hybrid, Flexible and Agile Working

Our office is located in Corsham, however our team works on a ‘Hybrid’ basis, and this is implemented in a ‘Flexible’ and ‘Agile’ manner. Provided we know where you are and you meet your contracted hours, are productive, and maintain a team ‘presence’; we do not mind where you work, how you work, or when you work. Day to day, this means we can go to that personal appointment without asking (just informing). Month to month, it means our team can work around life (e.g., childcare, summer (School) breaks, family emergencies).

Welfare, Travel & Workload

Ultimately, everyone wants a job they are happy in. Happiness, well-being, and empowerment are key components of enjoying work.

We directly manage workloads and responsibilities via our bespoke, employee-developed, project management system. This system automates admin and captures responsibilities with ease. This creates a transparency and allows our team to be responsive to workloads and deadlines. The team can see how many projects they are working on, the deadlines, and their responsibilities all in one place. We use our Monday Morning Meeting to schedule work, prioritise, and support one another. This meeting is for everyone to be supported and listened to. We limit evening work to a maximum of two evenings per week

Ecology is a difficult sector to maintain a level workload thorough the year. This is simply due to the seasonality of our survey work. In response, we limit our team to two evening surveys a week. Whilst we attempt to build a company which does not require (at request) additional hours beyond those contracted, we recognise we need a toil system. Our TOIL system is based on a like-for-like basis. Every additional hour worked is renumerated either through pay or leave.

Our next step in this area is to implement a four-day week. Our approach will be the 100-80-100 model. 100% of pay for 80% of hours, whilst maintaining 100% of productivity. This will interact with our Hybrid, Flexible, and Agile policies and our Contracts. Therefore, it is being carefully considered with a view to roll out in 2027.

Salary & Remuneration

Our salaries are in line with our local competitors and our salary bands are shown below. Additional renumeration includes:

  • No cap on price or time for CPD but request the CPD to be relevant to the role and time taken to be equitable between the team and undertaken in a manner which maintains productivity.
  • We provide regular in-house training from senior staff.
  • We’ve not set direct specialism pathways for team members at entry levels as we consider that (and feedback has confirmed) early career ecologists are likely to want exposure to all elements of ecology before deciding on which ‘route’ to take.
  • We’ve set direct pathways for learning and development of senior staff. Senior staff know their role, the steps they need to take for progression, and ultimately the vision of their role at Luscinia Ecology.
  • Enhanced pension contribution.
  • 33 days annual leave (25 days annual leave plus bank holidays (8).
  • Private healthcare, generous sick pay and a fully funded Income Protection scheme.
  • Birthday leave – an additional paid day off on your birthday
  • Festive shutdown – Guaranteed time off over the December festive period
  • Charity support days – two paid days per year to contribute to a cause you care about
