Great Crested Newt

About GCN Surveys

These surveys allow an accurate assessment of the ecological importance of Great Crested Newts within a Site. The surveys form the basis of the ecological decision making and associated mitigation, including detailed design and layout considerations.

Great crested newts are typically found within natural ponds and pools surrounded by unmanaged habitats. A dense collection of ponds within the Site/500m of the Site, is a good indicator that the Site may be suitable for this species.

The initial great crested newt survey is a Habitat Suitability Index Survey, which is a visual survey of the habitats and waterbodies within the Site to determine the suitability of the features for great crested newts. The waterbodies are scored in line with ten indices, which typically determine the need for further survey work. This survey can be completed at any time of year. We include this survey as standard within our Extended Phase 1 Habitat Survey.

There are multiple site types, which require different survey types. The key constraint is the short survey window between March and June. This means determining a strategy for the surveys early is key.

If surveys are required, then the first step is to determine presence / likely absence. This can be determined via analysis of a water sample to see if great crested newt DNA is present. The sample can be taken between April 15th and June 30th. Alternately, a traditional survey can be undertaken by visiting the water bodies four times between mid-March and mid-June to undertake various survey methods.

Great crested newt surveys are our most seasonally constrained surveys. Our Ecologists will assist the project team in determining the best survey approach and associated course of action.

If the Site is located within a Great Crested Newt District Licencing Scheme Area then at any point during the surveys above, the Proposed Development can stop survey work and apply into the scheme.
